Fashion Look Book Index — All the Look Books I Could Find

For those of you who are looking for ideas on what to wear, this post is for you!

Lookbook_girl What’s a Look Book?
"Look book" is the term used to reference a collection of images that are assembled to help illustrate "looks" or "outfits". It could be a clothing retailer or a fashion magazine, and in my case a blog!, who puts together a Look Book. The main objective is to help inspire the reader with complete looks from head to toe. It makes it easier for the viewer to picture the product when it is paired with other nicely coordinating pieces. Look Books are a fairly new trend but I believe they will become increasingly popular and important to the fashion retail industry.

I haven’t had as much time as I’d like to photoshop together looks for you in my Luxe Mix Look Book so here’s some sites to refer to whenever you want some insta-inspiration on outfit ensembles.

Note: I’ll keep adding to this as I find more. Please help us out by adding any you know of yourselves in the Comments section!

Fashion Activewear & Fashionable Workout Clothes — Time to Throw out those Holey Sweats

Anatomie_introI consider looking decently stylish at the gym to be both important to my self-image and helpful to getting the most out of my workout. I know you’re thinking… why should I care what I look like when I’m just going to throw my flab around and sweat out last night’s grease? Well for starters, there’s mirrors and eyes everywhere. When you look in the mirror and see a scary image staring back at you doesn’t it make it harder to run that extra mile? I feel like it’s enough to make me want to pack up my McNasty and head home! Even if you’ve got a few extra pounds to lose, a good fitting and well designed workout outfit can make you look sporty and ready to sweat it up while looking good. Wouldn’t that make it more fun at the gym? Better than showing up in an oversized tee and crusty sweats?? And please no over matchy-matchy workout gear. If you’re going to try work that that then your body better be slammin honey!!

Hopefully I’ve motivated at least a few of you to consider upgrading your gym clothes. Here are a few fitness clothing brands and sites to get you started on wardrobing your workout clothes… and hitting the gym everyday.

Handbag Holder — Want it!

The first time I heard about these they seemed kind of gimmicky but so incredibly useful. How many times have you sat at a restaurant clutching your bag in your lap or had it hanging precariously off the back of a chair and have some clumsy waiter knock it off — 3 times. Well I have. Handbag holders are meant to hang off a table and provide a hook for you to hang your bag on so it doesn’t have to be demoted to laying on the nasty ground. Eww. There are icky germs on your Gucci.

Don’t restaurants realize most women have a handbag or purse they came in with that will need to be stowed somewhere? I’ve considered buying a handbag hook/holder for some time now but held off since most of them were not very portable. I swore I would resist and wait until restaurants had the courtesy to provide these for the ladies.

But then… the other day I came upon the "Luxe Link Purse Holder".

Luxe_link_handbag_holder

"Instead of a cumbersome traditional purse hook, the Luxe Link has a stylish chain that wraps around a swanky circular top, and the shiny metal surface works as a mirror so you can always look Reese Witherspoon ready."

First off it’s gotta rock because it’s called the "Luxe Link" Purse Holder :) Then when I saw the picture of it I realized they had finally come up with a version that was portable that could easily and discreetly remain tucked away somewhere in the dark folds of your Jimmy Choo until needed.  At $40 It’s also cheaper than the rest on the market. The rest of the time it serves as a mirror so it’s doubly useful and space saving. Ingenious.

Here’s what the original styles look like. Like something you could jab someone’s eye out with.

Purse_pal

If you prefer this ornate design and perhaps run out of mace, you can get hooked up with one of these bad boys at Purse-Pal for $59.99.

Kaboodle — An Essential Tool for Online Shoppers

I started using Kaboodle on Dec 5th 2005… and have not let up one bit. In case you didn’t notice I can fall in love with technology –especially technology that augments shopping! Kaboodle was one of those days that my boyfriend at the time lost a little piece of my heart. If you are not yet familiar with social bookmarking and have not used things like Del.icio.us or Furl, well this is going to blow you away. Kaboodle is actually a slight variation of social bookmarking and it’s classified as "shopmarking" since instead of bookmarking sites you can save or mark items out on the web that you are interested in buying. You can create lists for anything you want to refer to later. This is super convenient to save things you’re considering buying but are not ready to make the plunge.

Kaboodle_add  You’ll definitely want to install the plug-in to get this button for your browser. From there anytime you are on a page/item you want to save just hit that "add to kaboodle" button and in 2-clicks the item is tucked away into one of your kaboodle lists.

The list I save most the things I want is found here at "What a Girl Wants".

Frugal Fashionista – Celebrities Changing the Face of Fashion

Jenniferhudsoncopy_2  If you haven’t ventured over to Frugal-Fashionista… this blog is a must read for ballers-on-a-budget. She deconstructs celeb styles daily with affordable pieces from sites like Tar~get, Old Navy, Wet Seal, and Fashion Flairs.

It’s interesting to see how the rise of the celebrity has revolutionized the fashion scene. 10 years ago we used to look to the rather boring and characterless supermodels of the era and perhaps a handful of public icons like Princess Diana or Jackie O. Today, it’s celebrities who rule as the fashion icons like Sienna Miller and Jessica Alba. It makes perfect sense. As societal creatures we look to the people around us for acknowledgement, reasurrance, and acceptance. This goes for fashion too. That’s why we tend to be influenced by other’s people style and fashion sensibilities around us — and often packs of girls tend to dress/look alike. Celebrities are just another source of this extended community. The reason why Frugal Fashionista’s blog works so well is that is enables girls to emulate the style of celebrities on a budget. Way to go Frugal Fashionista!

Luxe Mix for March — 15 Items = 27 Looks!

I’m all about maximizing my clothes. I like to get the most out of every piece I buy. The problem is a lot of the time I end up buying stuff on a whim without thinking through what I’m going to do with this thing once I get home. I’ve been thinking about this fashion/shopping/coordination solution for a bit and here’s my first attempt at creating a true Luxe Mix — a mix of luxe items that create a mini-wardrobe for the next few weeks… ok hopefully month or so. These items range in price but that’s what makes a good mix. You’ve got to complement cheaper items with quality in order to not look like you stepped out of walmart — not that i’ve anything against discount clothing but I think if you care about fashion and style you might as well look classy and sophisticated regardless of how much or little $$ you spend. If people are intersted I’ll shoot for creating more Luxe Mixes with more affordable pieces in the future.

Enjoy!

What to Wear: Date Night on a Spring Evening

This warm cali weather is makin me crazy… crazy happy! All I want to do is sit around outside in cute sheer tops and short skirts, sippin iced espresso. I keep telling myself to brace myself for one more cold spell but it doesn’t seem to be coming.

Here’s a look for my date night, for a night like tonight. In case you haven’t noticed dresses are in big time. Gotta get some cute dresses, mini dresses, and longer flowy ones if you want to last this spring season. I chose this satiny pink dress from Forever 21. Under $25!! It’s prefect for a date night since it’s sexy enough to wear out to a club or bar and with a coverup I won’t get cold or be too exposed while en route to dinner or wherever. When wearing dainty pieces like this pink satin dress I like to contrast it with something less feminine and soft like this motocycle jacket from Max Studio. I paired all this with some cute gold bangles and dangly earrings, snakeskin pups (featured in Obsessed for Snakeskin Stilletos), and this foldover clutch — oversized clutches are also huge this season. I like the brushed almost earthy effect of this Jimmy Choo clutch since it dresses it down a bit.

Visual Search! Like.com Offers a New Way to Shop Online w/o Having to Read all that Text

I was blown away when I first saw this site. The technology introduced on this site will forever change the way we shop for fashion online. I’m really serious!!

www.like.com

I must forwarn the site is still in beta so it’s extremely quirky and often stalls my browser or crashes it completely. I’m sure as time goes on the performance will improve steadily.

In any case it’s worth a look. They have built a system that allows shoppers to pick a product, like a shoe, shirt, or handbag and scour the web for similar looking products. Of course the search is contrained to sites like.com crawls so it’s not everything out there but maybe one day it will.

Above is a visual search I conducted on black heels. what’s great is that you can use your cursor to zone in on a specific part of the shoe or product that you like, such as the metal buckle of one of the shoes, or the stilleto heel and the search engine will retrieve all black heels that match that visual element.

I heard that the techonology they are using was originally built for facial recognition software. I’m glad they decided to put it to good use finally! Who cares about faces when you can be saving hours and hours of aimless searching for the perfect black patent leather stilleto??

Luxe for Less – March 11 2007

Looking good doesn’t always mean you have to unload mega bucks on top of the line designer labels. You can find fashonable clothes for less if you hunt a bit (something I do much much too much). If you’ve got the funds than by all means go for it but for those of us who like to update their wardrobes more often without breaking the bank, here’s a few items for spring you can add to your closet for considerably less.

Sorry the images aren’t clickable… still trying to figure out Image maps with Typepad. Use the links at the end of the post.

A Girl’s Guide to Buying and Wearing High Heels and Staying Comfortable

“Nothing has man invented yet that will do a better job than heels at making a good pair of legs look great, or great ones look fabulous.” — Stuart Weitzman

This post is dedicated to all the girls out there who kill themselves every day wearing dangerously pointy 4 inch heels (or those who wish they could). I support all of you and I think we should all band together and start a movement to demand more comfortable heels from shoe designers. I really don’t think it’s fair to have to go through so much pain to get that extra 4 inches of height or to have that sexy slant of the calves. Personally I think that if shoe designers paid a little more attention to our needs they could create more comfortable shoe designs. I have shoes in my closet that are actually comfortable… why aren’t more heels like them? Don’t these things get tested out before going to mass production? How many times have you bought a shoe, taken them home, worn them out a few steps to realize they are totally unwearable because they are cutting into your flesh? By then it’s too late to return them and you’re stuck. I have plenty of brand new shoes to give away if anyone is interested in some foot torture.

I very well may have to start this Women Against Uncomfortable High Heel Movement one day but In the meantime I’ve put together some information/resources I’ve collected over the years which help me endure the pain. I hope these help. If you have some tips yourself I’d love to hear them.

Update this this post — see post on 8/25/08

Insolia Inserts
www.insolia.com

Insolia

The problem:
You have a comfortable pair of heels that don’t rub your skin abrasively in any areas but after a full day in them the front balls of your feet are throbbing in pain and you have to make a mad dash for the nearest seat along your route to relieve these balls of pain.

The Solution:
A world-renowned podiatrist and an MIT rocket scientist teamed up to create a type of shoe pad that blows Dr. Scholls out of the water (not that I’m dissing on his products because I use Dr. Scholls products as well). The Insolia Inserts seem to work better for me than the average shoe pads. The technology behind them is that they help improve your body alignment and ankle stability while reducing pressure on the ball of the foot, lower back and leg fatigue (see diagram below).

The nice thing about these is that they are clear so they don’t look too funky in your hot heels.

Dr. Scholls
http://www.drscholls.com/

Drscholls
Dr. Scholls offers a wide range of foot and shoe products for hammer time feet. If you’ve got blisters, bunions, corns, calluses, or just aching soles the Doc can get you sorted out.

Massaging_gel_heel_cups_1My favorite are these gel inserts for shoes. My left ankle sits a little lower than the average size 6 so shoes tend to rub up against my ankle and that area gets very sore quickly in certain shoes. I found that if I slip a massaging gel heel insert (see below) my ankle is lifted higher in the shoe and pain is gone!

Moleskin_plus_padding_roll Another Dr. Scholl’s product I use is the Moleskin Padding. Basically the moleskin is a padded cloth that has adhesive on one side. You can cut the pad into any shape and then adhere it to your foot or shoe — wherever your shoe is rubbing up uncomfortably on your skin. I bought the value size roll and it’s lasted me quite some time. I find this to be more convenient and affordable than Foot Petals.

Foot Petals
http://www.footpetals.com/

Products_hheelz_2

If you are just looking for some fun shoe pads with cute designs then you’ll like Foot Petals.

Foot Petals offers a wide range of foot pads for various parts of the shoe. I was thrilled when this line came out years ago because it was a step in the right direction. These shoe pads were clearly designed and marketed with females in mind. They are pretty looking things and are all cut specifically for high heels, stilletos, open toe sandals, etc. My main complaint with these is that the adhesive never stays long enough. They are also fairly light on the padding so if you’ve got serious pain in your feet I’d go with something more substantial like the Insolia Inserts.

Buy 1/2 Size Larger Shoes and Wear Thick Padded Socks

May sound silly but I do this all the time in the cold weather months when wearing closed-toed shoes. I buy my shoes 1/2 larger and then I find the fluffiest, well-padded socks I can find and wear them together. I feel like my feet are bundled up nice and warm + my shoes never hurt, even when braving 4 inch stilleto boots. I started doing this after I got addicted to my Uggs. I was addicted to my Uggs and actually still am. I wish more shoe designers would add that nice wool lining in shoes.

Make the Shoe Salesman Do His Job

Before closing the deal on a pair of shoes make the salesperson work for his/her sale. Tell them you’re not sure if the shoe is comfortable enough. Generally these guys know the insider techniques to make a shoe fit your foot better. I’ve had salesmen add additional padding under the inner lining of shoes or just stretch the shoe out with their machines to break them in a little. Whatever it may be they know best so put them to work!

Invest in Quality Shoes

I read an article in a magazine (I believe it was the Luxury Magazine that Time puts out every quarter) a while back which posed a good question — "Are expensive luxury shoes worth the $$$?". In other words, do you get what you pay for? The conclusion of the article was yes you do. I have to agree wholeheartedly. Beyond just the fact that they last forever — I have had a pair of Gucci mules that just celebrated it’s 6th birthday! And they are still going strong. They look fabulous and continue to hold together almost good as new. I have re-soled them several times (this is a MUST BTW). Beyond just lasting forever, quality shoes are more comfortable too. They are sturdier and tend to provide more support. Flimsy cheaper materials tend to bend/slip out of shape and hurt your feet. Not to say that all expensive designer shoes are comfortable whatsoever but in general they are better made and thus fit your feet better.

Some good ones to try:
Manolo Blahnik
Jimmy Choo
Gucci

No good (infamous for being uncomfortable):
Christian Louboutin
Dior (hit or miss)

Cole Haan

Cole Haan is very foot comfort conscious. They have a partnership with Nike to use the cushioning and shock absorbing technology Nike uses in their sneakers. The most comfortable pair of boots I ever owned were these Cole Haan suede lace up boots. To this day I have not had the heart to throw these out even though they are so overworn and beatup. Secretly I’m hoping one day I can revive them. They deserve a second life. I found this article that talks a little more about Cole Haans latest line: http://www.azcentral.com/style/fashion/articles/092906comfypumps.html

"Charles" by Charles David and "Steven" by Steve Madden
I was speaking with a sales associate at Charles David many years ago when these lines were first launched that they were created specifically to address the comfort complaints customers were issuing on the regular lines. It was about time. Charles Davids have got to be some of the most uncomfortable shoes out there. The Charles line is much better. I never buy from the regular line. But beware not all of the Charles and Stevens are pure comfort. Make sure you try everything on and walk around in them for 5 minutes before purchasing (more on that to come).

Stuart Weitzman
I have a couple of these heels and they are super comfy. I have heard varying results from other girls but I think I read somewhere that he was using Insolia technology in his shoes. One killer looking pair of stilletos I have of his are so comfy I can wal/run all day in them and still smile at the end of the day. They are defn. worth a shot.

Who's the Luxe Mix?

I wouldn't qualify myself as anything official when it comes to fashion but I might officially qualify as a shopaholic. To keep from going broke I have learned to mix the luxe with the less, the cheap with the chic.
