The in-laws just left — it’s been an exhausting holiday break if you can imagine (always good to be with family but just as good to get your life back!)… so now just breaking into some deep winter cleaning. When the weather is muck out and I’m feeling the need to purify, I go straight to my closet and start purging! BTW I may say purge but that doesn’t mean I actually ever get around to throwing the clothes out of donating them away. Will have to explain my issues with getting rid of my stuff in another post someday. For now let’s just say I clear out space to make room for the new kiddies.
One look at my closet and I realized that I’ve held off much too long in re-stocking on clothes hangers. I’ve got way too many of those cheap metal hangers you get from the cleaners. Tssk Tsssk Jenni… after preaching this and that to others about the importance of keeping an orderly closet. Is it just me or do hangers seem to disappear like socks evaporate into thin air? Well before anyone comes snooping into my closet I’ve got to do something about my metal mess and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or recommendations. I keep hearing about those velvet hangers that help prevent your clothes from slipping off. Ingenious or gimmick? Who has them? Anyone have anything bad to say about then?
I read a review online for one brand called Joy Mangano Huggable Hangers in which one customer said they bleed color onto clothes, while others said they loved them. They are selling on HSN.com so that’s gotta mean they are pretty well vouched for.. right??
I also see this brand everywhere called Karen Rhodes Velvet Hangers (pictured above), which seem to have the most color options and widest distribution which makes me think she might be the orginal velvet hanger. Hers are also the most expensive, at $39.99 for 24 being the best price I could find at Overtock.com.
A cheaper alternative I found were these “flocked hangers” from a no name brand at Overstock.com. $99 for 120 of them!! The reviews on the site said they are comparable in quality to the more expensive brands. I don’t know whether I trust those reviews completely… I’m also wondering whether I need 120… but too scared to start counting my closet inventory.
Lastly, I’m also considering staying with the natural wood hangers I’ve already got, and instead using these non-slip rubbery stickers you can apply to the hanger to prevent slippage. In actuality you only need non-slip for about 20%-30% of your clothes if even that. I’m kinda turned off by the thought of having mixed hangers in my closet so if I go velvet I gotta go all the way!
Looking for thoughts! If anyone has any feedback on their experience with velvet hangers please do me a favor and share!
u sound like u have ocd like me… haha~ wire hangers r forbidden in my closet. they have to all be wooden, from the same manufacturer and the same wood shade. and of course the closet needs to be in color order – white to black from left to right…
i use rubbery stickers to stick to my wooden hangers since like u say u gotta go all the way if u go velvet… ttfn~
wow… that’s impressive. Same wood tone and same manufacturer eh? Ok I think you one up me there. haha. Also, I have this habit now of clumping all my newest items together (which obviously ends up being the popular side of my closet). I’ll usually pick something from this area and then find older stuff to complement and complete the look. It does make for a messier closet though, so every once in awhile I do re-organize into the rainbow like you
Thanks for the comment!
contact me and we go on with the hanger talk
OMG – you really need to get some of the velvet hangers from http://www.idealworld.tv (under the Home section). BRILLIANT!!! I bought a small pack at Christmas and am just going on line to get the whopper 150 piece set. I instantly gained 30% extra in my wardrobe with the nasty hangers I replaced – a mixture of bulky wooden and/or plastic ones, and some truly terrible metal ones – and didn’t have to let one item go!! They are a perfect shape for even the most delicate items and do not create nasty shoulder marks. Suitable for the silkiest fabrics – nothing drops off! Do yourself (and your clothes) a favour and get some!
@Julie
I found an 8 pack for $5 at Big Lots 3 weeks ago and I should have bought every last one at that price! I love them! The cheapest I’ve been able to find them is about .90 cents each… and I’d love to switch 100% as well… guess I’m going to have to do it slowly because I can’t afford to get over 200 new hangers! Good Luck!
Julie — I was just searching all over for the best price on those velvet hangers myself. My closets are overflowing into stand alone addtional closet space and I was trying to find a way to “unwiden” the load without having to part with anything that I might need 5 years down the road!

The Karen Rhodes velvet hangers are superior to the others! These hangers are made from metal and then flocked, so do not bend and break like the ones made of plastic and then flocked!
I’ve said that least 2493924 times. The problem this like that is they are just too compilcated for the average bird, if you know what I mean
